University of Chicago GSB

PhD Program

Students in the Marketing Ph.D. program specialize in one of the following three areas. Ph.D graduates from Chicago GSB have gone on to many distinguished positions in the top marketing faculty.

The theoretical foundation provided in the marketing Ph.D. program is enhanced by the program's flexibility, whereby doctoral students can choose among these three areas to specialize in.

Students specializing in Consumer Behavior take courses not only in the GSB but also in the Psychology, Sociology. Similarly those specializing in Economics and Quantitative Methods take courses in the Economics and Statistics departments. One of the acknowledged strengths of Marketing Ph.D. graduates from Chicago is the training they receive in these "basic" disciplines.

Specific examples of research in the marketing area include the study of consumer decision-making in a variety of different contexts; the investigation of the signaling effects of price, advertising and other marketing instruments; analyses of the effects of consumer and trade promotions; cross-category analysis of marketing effects on household brand choice behavior, etc. The program is designed for those seeking careers as university professors at leading research institutions.

The Kilts center offers fellowships for doctoral students in their final year of dissertation research. Upon successful completion of their dissertation proposal, all doctoral students in marketing receive a Kilts fellowship. Check the Center Fellows page for current holders of the fellowship.
